Grizedale Mountain Bike Challenge 2008

Part Two - Ride Day - Gollum's Gossip
So, we tie our race numbers to the bikes, do our duty at the latrines, then it's time to make our way
to the start with 2 minutes to go to the briefing. But hang on,
where's Steve W? Vanished, gone, AWoL. Flight Lieutenant Mick orders
the rest of us down there anyway and we scoot off to the Visitor
Centre. When we arrive, we are at the back of a massive gathering of
lycra-clad posers, some 200 metres from the start line, and well out
of range of the PA system. Five minutes later there was a queue of
another hundred or so behind us. And still no sign of the Goateed
One. We figured he MUST be ahead of us, and when the bugle blows to
start the event, we head off fairly mundanely behind the mass of
front runners. That lasted until the 500 metre mark half way up the
second climb, when Gollum decided it was time to overtake a few
strugglers and find our missing wizard. A minute later the others
were with him as we picked our way through the sprawling, wobbly
mass.
Now you need to remember Mick's Master Plan - stay together, ride as
a group, encourage each other and don't go barmy. Steve said the
same. So far, 3 out of 4
wasn't bad. However, Gollum had burned a wee bit too much fuel
getting past the slower riders, so much that he suddenly found
himself gasping for breath. That coincided with the sun making it's
first appearance through the hazy cloud, and resulted in him having
to make a quick decision - keep up, or stop. Sensibly, he chose the
latter, but it took him a few minutes to disengage Derek's borrowed
GPS from his Camelbak in order to get the thing off, and then remove
the good old MidAirCrisis long-sleeved top which he'd popped on over
the short-sleeved NMBC version as he was pretty cool at the start.
By the time he'd reconstructed himself, almost the whole field had
gone past.
What was left of his rapidly frying brain now began to analyze the
scenarios available to him:-
1. Go ape and try to catch up again
2. Go easy and hope a decent pace would do the trick
3. Go home
Going home would have created dreadful worry for his colleagues, so
that was out. A "decent" pace for the Gollum would be several mph
less than the same for the Skipper, Mick and the others,
so that was out. Also, it's a well known fact that Gollums are
remotely linked to apes by Evolution. Therefore, go for number One.
For the next two hours or so he tried picking off as many riders as
possible in the hope of seeing the Squad up ahead. What managed to
escape his solitary brain cell was the fact that Mick, Chris, Ian
and Jason were also trying to catch Steve at the same time. Now to
put this in simple, easy-to-understand terms, the Squad were
travelling at probably double the speed of a steaming Gollum so
there was no way this tactic was ever going to produce anything but
a snack for the vultures.
About 11:30 he made a breakthrough - jumping onto the back wheel of
a youngster he managed to get dragged along at an alarming rate for
a couple of climbs and that fantastic downhill to the start of the
Wild Boar ride. The pair just charged along pushing everyone else
aside, and on the downhill making so much racket that the riders
already on it cleared
well out of the way without the pair having to appeal to them. Unfortunately, this
wouldn't last too much longer, as after launching from the last
take-off before the fireroad, the Trek's front tyre decided it was
too soft to stay on the rim. It blew off and spread Golly all over
the floor. Cheers to the few riders around who asked if I was OK.

It soon became obvious that the tyre had no Stan's No-Tubes goo left
in it, but quite apart from that, Golly couldn't puff hard enough to
reseat the thing anyway, and gave up quickly, popping in a tube.
Never live it down now. Just as he was collecting his gear together,
who should also launch out onto the fireroad than Chris! He'd
collected his own puncture some way back, and the Gollum hadn't seen
him at the side of the trail as he, too had needed to shove a tube
in his rear wheel after his Bontrager Super Juice let him down!
We
continued from there together for about an hour until another
downhill singletrack section split us up, and it was here that the
fun really started.
Riding through the trees, the pair of them, some distance apart,
came across a distinctly indistinct trail arrow. To Chris and the
Gollum it pointed down the hill to the road below. To most others, it
pointed up the way! Guess what? Yep, first Golly, then Chris a while later took it to mean "down". In Golly's case, he followed it
down to the road, turned left into Satterthwaite, then right through
a farm and up to the Marshall Point at the 3 mile marker. A short
discussion with the Marshall and a look at his bike PC which showed
14 miles or so convinced the Gollum that he'd gone wrong somewhere.
He then backtracked a couple of miles to the previous Marshall and
asked for advice. When he asked if he could climb back up the
singletrack he'd just come down, he was met with "no, you can't!
here comes the leader!" as a flash of red, white and black Lycra
jumped out of the trees and onto the road - number 67 I think. So I
knew the eventual winner at 12:15pm, barring disaster!
"Oh, crap!" blurted Golly. "Can I get back on the trail if I go that
way?" he asked the Marshall, pointing along the road away from
Satterthwaite back to Grizedale. "Dunno sonny " (this bloke was half
my age!) " but there's been a few gone that way already". No
surprise there, with the sign the way it was. Thank goodness I
wasn't the only one making the same mistake. BUT I claim it WASN'T a
mistake, I was following the signs!
I must have just left that point when Chris came down the same
stretch onto the road, but when he tossed his coin he decided to
keep going from the 3 mile mark to the finish, and be applauded by
the crowd for his extremely high finishing position and cracking
time!
Poor Gollum, on the other hand, continued backtracking to Bogle
Crag, where he rejoined the fireroad climb back up the side of Great
Intake again, and then over to Breasty Haw where, after a nice
little warm up of 460 feet in the "Up" direction, he decided it was
time to replace his bald rear brake pads. So peaceful up here, miles
from anyone and anyplace! He also managed to leave a small deposit
which he christened "Retards Revenge" aimed squarely at the Ramblers
Association, so be careful where you tread up here and don't follow
your nose.
Meantime, back with the Peloton, I can report very little, other
than the fact that the Doc (Steve W) had to take a nice lie down on
his back for half an hour when the ride began to tell on him
somewhere before the finish. And no wonder, as he'd been closest to the front
at the start and must have been trying to catch the rest of us who were all
behind him. Now that's what I call Mission Impossible! Also, looking at the timing
sheets it was good to see young Ian F managing to stay with the Hard Men, Mick
and Jason, over this distance on such tough terrain.
Anyway, back to Gulliver Gollum's Travels: a couple of minutes worth of fireroad brought him, at last, to one
of those cosy, unmissable(!) red arrows. At the same moment, a pair of Marshalls
pulled up on a quad bike pulling a trailer to collect those arrows!
Golly told them his tale of woe and asked if he was now back on
track - Yes! They also informed him he was Tail End Charlie so he
sure wasn't going to be overtaken by anyone. Off he trolled,
frightened and alone in the Wilderness.
Can't remember what the time was now, but the silly old Gollum
decided to get moving a bit quicker. Unfortunately, the hills just
kept on coming, and when you've already seen the 3 mile marker once,
the sight of a 5 mile marker is pretty hard to bear. When you then
get back to that 3 mile marker, the feeling is pretty indescribable.
And when you have the company of two travelling marshals on 2-stroke
motocrossers for two hours, you don't get much clean air to breathe
when you most need it!
As partial compensation, however, the downhill singletracks, stream
beds and rock gardens were all taken balls-out with nothing to lose
by now, and they were fantastic. Even being submerged in the Black
Swamp at the last Timing Point became a high point when the girl
there said she'd seen it all and had a great chuckle!
Turning the final left hander at the top of Hall Wood and seeing the
Finish Line below was a sight that brought instant sexual
gratification (sorry, I mean adrenalin rush) but about half way down
that last 100 feet of drop I couldn't believe what I saw on the
hillside next to the run-in. The rest of Team MidAirCrisis assembled
like scattered sheep to cheer me back in - fan bl@@dy tastic!!!
Not only that, but Stevie B, in his capacity as Chief P!$$ Taker,
pushed the GollyBike® back
to the car park as someone else handed the old bod a cuppa and plate
of foreign muck. At the Post Mortem I think we all agreed it had
been a pretty tough test, but a good ride. Everyone agreed that the
singletracks were superb, and most of us were ecstatic about the
stream beds and rough, rocky sections. It also provided plenty of
interest with everyone having his own story to tell at the finish,
and as a side effect, the Club shirts attracted a good deal of
attention from other North Easterners who didn't know we existed.
Part One - To Follow
I'll try to add more detail when I get my breath back, get the GPS
track downloaded, and of course include the Saturday trip and camp
site story, soon as I can. And I apologise for this being the Life
and Times of a Lost and Lonely Gollum, but I can't report on what I
didn't see! So all contributions welcome, Team Mates!
