Welcome to Gollum's Garage

A series of videos and maybe other stuff which, at some huge stretch of the imagination, might actually prove useful to someone, somewhere, someday. Or not.

I've washed the dishes, put the garbage out and hoovered the floor, what now?

1. How to True a Wheel - 105 megabytes/5 minutes

2. How to make an Emergency Gear Hanger - 15MB/6m 30s

3. How to check for worn teeth - 13MB/3m 45s

4. How to check for chain stretch - 38MB/1m 30s

5. DUMMIES GUIDE TO CHANGING GEAR ON A HILL WITHOPUT SNAPPING YOUR CHAIN.

Don't have a video for this, just a few words. Out on the trail we all get taken by surprise sometimes, no matter how much experience we may have, or even how many times we've ridden the same chunk of trail. However, after seeing the latest chain snapping performance I can't hold it in any more. So:

YOU SHOULD BE LOOKING AHEAD (ok, glancing) SO YOU KNOW WHAT'S COMING NEXT. If it's a sharp climb, drop into your climbing gear on the way to the obstacle, NOT half way up the thing. If it does take you by surprise, drop a few gears WITH YOUR WEIGHT OFF THE PEDALS, and NOT while heaving on them. This is at least going to make an awful lot of horrible gnashing noise, and at worst snap the chain. Seen it happen dozens of times over the years. And it's not always newbies that do this, very surprisingly. The clattering derailleur is a very common sound when the ground begins to rise. Just try and have some sympathy for the revolving bits on your bike, they are not from the planet Krypton.
