And HERE'S THE RESULT OF A FANTASTIC MATCH AT HULL!!! Thank You Andy Schofield and all of his Blackbell Electrical Hull squad for the hospitality and the sporting match we had on Sunday 31st July 2005. Before our match Hull raced a very depleted Heckmondwike team in the Northern League and emerged comfy winners. Most of the riders from that meeting took part in the challenge against MidAirCrisis and I'm happy to report it was a super, sporting contest. Hull were never going to be too troubled by our hapless mob of veterans and brand newbies but I hope we put on a decent show and made it worthwhile for everyone. It's not always easy to get people to stay behind after they've ridden a match, especially with absolutely nothing at stake, but our good friend Andy Schofield managed just that. Sorry to hear that Andy has been forced to stop riding due to injuries (tell me about it!) but he's permanently etched into the history of English Cycle Speedway after decades of dedication to his Club and the Sport in general. I'm very proud to have known him.
I spent the afternoon agreeing with everyone
how great the day had been. The score didn't matter although we were surprised
not to be whitewashed, we enjoyed ourselves tremendously and nobody
got hurt. I was a bit off there - Jason's heat 2 crash, which he shrugged off as
usual, really wrecked his left knee
and gave him quite a bit of pain overnight
and into Tuesday! Sorry Jason. I didn't even notice him lying semi-conscious in
the pits (above) Get well soon!!!
Here's the crash vid. Anyway Jay finished a deserved
top scorer, even with the pain
. His gating was almost normal at the end of the
match.
Mick
had a practice lap slide and fall and
seemed to take it easy after convincing himself the surface was slippery. I
think he may have convinced Ashie aswell, but the latter seemed to get into his
stride in later rides
. Andy found it hard, this being totally alien to Triathlon
Territory, but he plugged away and at least can say he's done it
. Didn't
find out until Wednesday night practice that Mick also did his knee in and
couldn't sleep on Sunday night. Real tough doing that on your warm-up lap! My own
Death Wish crash in the first running of heat 4 with canny lad from Hull, and MidAirCrisis'
favourite Hull Rider, Paul Beharrell left me almost unscathed,
thanks to my hidden weapon (661 full body armour)
. I say hidden, but I think you
could see the lumps sticking out everywhere! Laugh if you like, it saved me.
John was going great guns after making a basic
first bend error in heat 1 and would surely have top scored over five rides.
Guest for the day, Keith Dyer,
sportingly agreed to step into the side to
complete the eight and must have enjoyed his nostalgic return to racing. I
reckon I had Jimmy Graham
on the verge of agreeing to ride just as Keith spoke
up! Once it's in the blood...
That left our other new boy, David, to sample
his first track and match, like Andy. After a careful (slow) start, he gradually
got to grips, his competitive nature almost allowing him to beat Hull's top man
Andy Angell who he led for three laps
in the final race to put the lid on a
great afternoon
.
Here's where he lost his leg and the race
Well Done All, and thanks to the ladies (and Ross, our mascot)
