Cramlington was again the starting point for this ride on Thursday 6th July 2006 with John and Terry only finding the time to wheel out the bikes. Heading north we just meandered around in the strong, very warm evening sun
looking for off-road routes to investigate. Soon after starting out, we found this top secret research helicopter standing in a secluded field - can't tell you where though, we're sworn to secrecy.

A bit later we found ourselves in the middle of Utah Salt Flats. Well, maybe not quite - let's call them Hartford Mud Flats. This here field is weird, and something spooky is going on there - it has little chimneys poking up out of the grass behind the mud bit every ten feet or so. It's also a pig to ride over, and we had to turn back due to the number of nettle stings we were getting. The slaked mud field did have the odd damp spot and it felt very much like quicksand when we strayed a little from the dry, cracked parts. It felt good to get back on tarmac!

We headed for Bedlington, and entered the Riverside Park just south of the town. Onto the path and away we went towards Humford Mill. Here's a little vid of John crossing the stepping stones, no fancy trials riding I'm afraid. We were last here in May, but we approached from the far end. It was impassable that day, and now, with a good dose of wet and sunny weather on the greenery, Humford was again turned into a jungle. This made getting the bikes through to East Hartford a real chew, we were pushing and carrying at least as much of riding the couple of miles along the dense riverside. Nettles, thorns, logs and tree stumps made it a nast little challeng, but once we'd started it was easier to persevere and get the job done. Towards the end of this bit, the memories of Andy riding straight into the little steel-fenced bridge came flooding back to cheer us up.

Neither of us got out undamaged, with John bearing the brunt of it due to leading over the gnarly stuff. He must have pushed the worst of the killer plants out of my way! Here's the trail's legacy on John's forearm, and his shins fared little better. Gollums, as you would expect, are as one with the Universe and so Terry escaped the full force of the plant attack.
